Sorry for the English .. I found a translator , but I’ve used it many times to translate webpages and it makes me laugh a lot 😉 . Sometimes it makes no sense at all . Here is an example .. I’ll let it translate my first paragraph . See what you all think :

[Fyrstur , ÉG vildi eins og til hrós þú allur á a mikill website! A vinur málsgrein mig a hlekkur til hér í óákveðinn greinir í ensku email hann fullur bræði , og ÉG hafa been stöðva það út alltaf síðan. Þú hafa a mjög víðtækur ljósmynd albúm , hver hefur mig sumir mikill hugmynd óður í hvaða það verða vera eins og til Ísland.]

First , I would like to compliment you all on a great website ! A friend sent me a link to here in an email he wrote , and I have been checking it out ever since . You have a very extensive photo album , which has given me some great ideas about what it must be like to be in Iceland .

I live on the North shore of Lake Superior , so I can relate to the winter images I have seen in your album . Although we have had a very good winter so far , as temperatures go . We’ve only been down to -25°C once so far , and that was with a windchill . And we have yet to see any real snow ; it was a green Christmas here in the city , and only 2 cm in the woods surrounding . I think the skiiers and snow machine enthusiasts aren’t too happy ;-(

One of the reasons I am posting is because I have a 1997 FZJ80 petrol , that I imported into Canada , which I would like to modify . So far I have replaced the shocks and coils with Old Man Emu Light/Med shocks/coils . This raised the truck almost 8cm over stock . Next I put on BFG AT KO 315/75R16 tyres .

I would like to add some Formverk flares and move the rear axle back , and then put on some 38″ tyres . A friend in Iceland did just this as many of you may have , and even sent me some great pics . The problem is that I myself will not be doing the work , and so I would need a great deal of detailed info before I trust my local auto repair shop to start cutting into my truck .

I am thinking of things like moving the rear axle . I went to the Formverks site and fell in love with the blue HDJ80 they have pics of . It is , of course , very similar to pics of your own 80’s I have seen in your photo album . I unfortunately don’t have any experience welding etc , so I would like to find detailed instructions , and perhaps drawings for making the necessary modifications . It’s one thing to look at pictures , it’s entirely something else to know all the correct measurements etc .

Perhaps I’m being a little fearful of starting this project without precision information on every aspect . I think perhaps I was spoiled by the lift I put on my 4Runner . Trailmaster? sent all the necessary parts and detailed instructions … if I thought someone in Iceland could get together all the parts needed for this project and could ship them to me with instructions , I’d be signing a cheque today :-))

    bestur horfa á ,

    Tyler

The translation is bad. Use your language, everybody understand english better than this translation. Try contact Arctick Trucks or Fjallasport, they are in it for the money.

Haha , I tried translating that back to English , and it looked crazy ! I’ll stick to English I guess *S*

I’ll try Arctic trucks again , and look into the other site as well . I would have liked to have done this on my own ( I did my ’93 4Runner’s suspension alone , and it was simple ) but here in Canada no one has any experience with creating your type of setup . They would not have the first clue … kinda like me haha . If they and I saw these trucks every day , I’m sure we’d be able to manage far easier . Also , if we got into any trouble along the way , we could just call up a friend and ask for help .

*thinking* Maybe I’ll put my 80 on a ship and stole away , eh ?

Do any of you guys have a beefed up 80 ? I’d love to hear about your experiences building them up etc .

    Cheers ,

    Tyler

There are several LandCruiser 80 here that have been heavily modified (I presume that´s the 80 you refer to). We use them a lot on 44" tires, as well as 38". Basicly there are two big truks here that are the most popular amongst Icelanders. The LC 80 and Nissan Patrol. The latter isn´t imported to the US or Canada but they are used a lot in Australia as well as in UN ops around the globe. In Iceland almost every type of truck has been modified for glacier offroading. Like the guys here above say, the specialists for the Toy are http://www.arctictrucks.is and http://www.fjallasport.is for almost every other type.

Well, best looking at to you too…
    Penis.

    One arother thing.
The big difference in modifying trucks here Vs the West is that as a fundamental issue we keep our trucks as low as possible. Cut a lot from the fenders of the smaller ones but keep´em low. The result is a truck that can be driven of the street as well as offroad. In snow there is no issue having the cabin in the clouds. Floatation is the magic word. It´s just weight against area, and since we only have around 1-5 psi in the tires in heavy snow conditions, we have a lot of area. Tire heat is very seldom a problem in snow.

    Here´s looking at you again…

    Hi ,

Good points … I like the fact that Icelandic 4×4’s have a low centre of gravity , but are very beefy . Thats one of the qualities that attracts me . Your trucks are very large and capable , yet look proportional in size ( tires/lift/vehicle) . You look at a vehicle in the west here with 38 or 44" tyres and they are usually way up in the air ! "Monster truck" as they say . You guys , instead , cut away metal and allow the vehicle to fit around the tyres . They look great that way , and are therefore street safe as you mentioned .

I’m going to climb under my 80 when I get a chance to familiarize myself with the suspension so that when I call up Arctic trucks , or someone else here that can guide me , I’ll already know what the various components are that need modification .
