First, I appoligize as this is probably not the right place for this question, but I don’t speak Icelandic. I have an FJ80 and was wondering if anyone could provide information into the type of suspension and lifts used in these modifications. How do you make these great vehicles? I live in northern Minnesota, where we get plenty of snow, and would prefer the „superjeep“ type vehicle as opposed to the traditional American truck.

This is the right place for this question and welcome!

First of all you have to get few things straight.

We do things up here who will get car and tyre manufactures
to scream in horror and others to cry.

After we have modified our trucks, they have to go through
special inspection prosess where every modification is
checked, and every car and truck here is checked every year
for safety, smog, etc. and brake performance is measured.

Our club, (the 4×4 travel club of Iceland) have a special
technical commitee hwo works closely with the government
    vehicle inspection system.

We have limits for tyre size, (45% of wheelbase) lift,
(4" suspension, 4" body lift if I rememer right,
but total may not exceed 6"). Other limits include headlight
height, bumper height, extra lights, and the fender flares
    must cover the tyre threads.

To fit toyota FJ80 with, say 38" or 44" tyres, the usual
modifications involve lift, (welding extensions to the
suspension hangers and longer coils) moving the rear axle
4-6" back, and extensive cutting with fender flares.
(We even cut the doors sometimes).
New rings, pinions and lokcers are needed and lokcers are
usually installed in the same time.

To drive these beasts in deep snow, we air down, and sometimes
all the way to 3 psi.

There are few companies here who make these modifications and
some fo them are exporting this knowledge.
For your vehicle I would recommend Arctictrucks
    their homepage (in english) is

    http://www.arctictrucks.com

    One final warning!
Here in Iceland, these modifications costs over 10.000$
    with everything involved.

I’m glad I found the right place for the question. It took quite a while to struggle through a little translation as there is not a whole lot on the internet to help translate:) Thank you for the information, it was what I was looking for. Here in the US we too have regulations, though they vary from state to state. However, most American lifts are designed for much different conditions, and rarely are any lifts for tires orf 36 to 44 inches high quality or practical. I was planning on relocating the rear axle, and am glad to hear that’s how you do it too. I might buy a cheap toyota pickup to experiment on with this first, as I would not like to cut up my Landcruiser and have it not work. Do you generally have to put in new rear wheel wells with this type of project? Also, do you ever use beadlock wheels? It is amazing what only 6" of lift and some sound engineering can do!

Body modifications and new wheelwells are not always necessary, but I think they are if one goes all the
way up to 44" And yes, beadlock wheels are sometimes used.
